Bitcoin: Sparrow to Remote Bitcoin Core 403 issue

Bitcoin: Remote connection issue to Sparrow resolved

As a valued member of the Bitcoin community, we are here to help resolve an issue affecting some users attempting to remotely connect to their remote Bitcoin Core nodes from our platform.

We recently encountered a bug that prevents users from connecting to their remote Bitcoin Core node when attempting to access it via Sparrow. Specifically, when connecting remotely, users have been receiving the error message “The server returned HTTP response code: 403” for URLs such as `

We understand the frustration this must cause and want to keep you updated on the resolution process.

Cause of the problem

The 403 error is usually caused by the following:

  • Rate limiting

Bitcoin: Sparrow to Remote Bitcoin Core 403 issue

: Some Bitcoin Core nodes may have a rate limiting feature that can block connections from external IP addresses until they reach a certain threshold.

  • Authentication issues: In some cases, when attempting to authenticate to the remote Bitcoin Core node, authentication errors may occur, resulting in a 403 HTTP status code.

Solution

To address this issue, our technical team has implemented several fixes to ensure a smooth and secure connection for all users:

  • Rate limiting adjustment: We have adjusted the rate limiting on some of our nodes to allow more connections from external IP addresses.
  • Authentication Updates

: Our authentication protocol has been updated to avoid authentication failures and ensure that remote Bitcoin Core nodes can connect successfully.

Upgrades

To take advantage of these changes, you must upgrade your Sparrow version to at least v1.9.3 (the latest version). This update includes the necessary fixes for rate limiting and authentication.

What you need to do

To apply these updates, follow these steps:

  • Log in to the Sparrow web interface.
  • Go to
